会社のみんなに本を読めって言っている。
図書室でも作ろうかな。
出張には短編集を携えます。合間に読めるから。
選書はあまり考えてないです。ジャケ買いだったりする。
今読んでいるのは「チーヴァー短編集」。
ジョン・チーヴァーっていうアメリカの作家。目次に並んでるタイトルが良かったんだよ。
「父との再会」ってのを読んでみたの。
ちょっとほんわかした気持ちになりたくて。
でも内容が全く違った。
離婚して久々に父と会うことを楽しみにしていた息子が、１日、父とランチしたりパブをまわる。
そこで父親は散々、悪態をついてどの店からも追い出されちゃうんだよ。
最初は息子もどっちが悪いかわからなかったけど、１日の終わりには２度と父親と合わないと決めて、それが最後。
不意打ちをくらった。そういうのがいい。
会社の自分のデスクにも本を積んでおきます。
会社にいて誰かと話していると、この人とこんなに理解し合えていなかったのか、通じていなかったのかということは多々起こります。
たとえばお金の話。お客さんの価値観、実際のコスト、スタッフに払うお金。それはすべて繋がっている。
仕事のクオリティがうちの「お金」の価値を決めていく。
それがうまく伝わらない時、「因果性」という哲学論書を手に取ります。拾い読み、流し読みなんだけど、そこでぱっとその因果関係を示す言葉が見つかる。
そうやって見つけてきた言葉が「心を動かす」。
それがお客さん、仕事相手、家族や友人に届く言葉だよね。
どういう言葉を使うかは、その見つけ方も大切。
本の中から見つけた方が、不意打ちを喰らったり、ネットとは比べ物にならにないほどのボキャブラリーが潜んでる。

本は文脈があるから、そこの言葉から見つける方がいい。
ウェブは文脈がなくて、便利だけど、根っこの部分が曖昧だから、使いすぎると相手に見透かされちゃう気がする。
毎週、ジムに行くために地下鉄に乗ります。
みんなじっと下を向いてスマホを見ている。誰もが見慣れた光景。
でも最近、うちのスタッフが昼食をとりながら本を読んでいたんですよ。何年ぶりに見た光景かな、と思った。
何を読んでいるかまでは聞けなかったけど。
ハッとしました。
会社のエントランスに書棚をつくって本並べて、そのタイトルだけ毎日眺めて、言葉が拾えるだけでもいいのかもしれない。

I always tell everyone at work to read books.
Maybe a space for books should be made.
I like to take a bunch of short stories with me when traveling to read in my spare time.
But I never really think much about what tobring.
I usually just go by the covers.
I’m currently reading The Stories of John Cheever.
He’s an American short-story author, and I liked the titles in the table of contents.
I read a story from it called Reunion.
I was expecting a heartwarming story, but it turned out to be completely different.
A son who is looking forward to seeing his father for the first time since his divorce spends the day having lunch with him and going to pubs,
only to get kicked out of everywhere they go, because the father keeps mouthing off.
At first, the son is unsure who was at fault in the quarrels,
but by the end of the day, he never wants to see his father again, and that’s the end of it.
It totally caught me off guard, and I like that.
I also keep a pile of books on my desk at work.
When I talk to people at my company, I often find we don’t understand or can’t get through to each other.
Take money, for example; customers’ ideas of value, actual costs, and money paid to staff are all connected, but it’s the quality of work that determines the value of money.
When I feel I can’t communicate this idea well, I pick up a philosophy book called Causation.
I skim through it and suddenly find the words to express this causal relationship.
The words found in this way have the power to move people’s hearts.
They’re the kind of words that will get through to customers, business associates, family, and friends.
The way we find the right words to use is important too.
I prefer finding them in a book because it takes you by surprise.
Plus, the amount of vocabulary it holds is incomparable to what you see online.
Books are in context, so it’s much better to find the right words there.
The Internet is convenient, but it has no context, so the underlying principles are vague.
If you use words from there too much, I feel the other person will see right through it.
Every week, I take the subway to the gym.
Everyone’s just staring down at their smartphones.
It’s an all-too-common sight.
But recently, one of my staff members was reading a book while eating lunch.
I wondered how long it had been since I last saw that.
I didn’t get to ask what they were reading, though.
I was too taken aback.
It might be a good idea to put a bookshelf at the entrance to the workplace.
Just line it with books and have everyone pick up words as they pass by, looking at the titles every day.
